During the Civil War, Day served as a colonel of local African American troops.
He died in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 15, 1869. He was 50 years old.
He was survived by his wife and three children, born between 1857 and 1861.
He was interred in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
